I think the problem with the more recent iterations of the Star Trek franchise is that most of them want to be all high-stakes political intrigue all the time, when the real formula of all the most successful instalments has been 25% high-stakes political intrigue, 25% overwrought soap opera, and 50% impenetrably straight-faced workplace sitcom. The only one out of the last decade that really gets it is the cartoon version, and even that arguably misses the mark a bit because its poker face keeps slipping during the sitcom bits.
